Shepherd’s Center Fairfax-Burke is looking for Transportation Drivers and Friendly Callers

The Shepherd’s Center has a vision: A World Without Loneliness. To achieve that vision, they work hard to ensure that as members of the community age, they do so with dignity and experience a high quality of life. Services include health advocacy, decluttering advice, food pick-up and delivery, and friendly callers and visitors, including to but not limited to veterans.

Shepherd’s Center serving Fairfax and Burke has three available volunteer opportunities. For more information about either, please contact RSVP Volunteer Specialist, Shannon White, at swhite@volunteerfairfax.org.

  1. Transportation Driver
    • The volunteer will provide clients with necessary transportation to medical-related appointments such as:
      • Doctor’s office
      • Dentist
      • Physical therapy
      • Chemotherapy
      • Etc.
    • The volunteer will provide transportation to destinations that are non-medical such as:
      • Grocery store
      • Hairdresser
      • Library
      • Bank
      • Select Shepherd’s Center functions
      • Etc.
    • You must provide your own vehicle, and have a current valid license and insurance.
    • Volunteers are only responsible for transportation to/from events specified. The Shepherd’s Center support volunteers when setting limitations regarding unreasonable client requests.
  2. Friendly Callers – These caring volunteers make regular phone calls to home-bound or isolated older adults.  These volunteers have developed real friendships with those they contact. The focus of this service is to assure older adults that someone is thinking about them. Along with providing companionship, volunteers are supporting older adults to maintain their connections within the community.
