Volunteer with the Adapted Aquatics Program with Fairfax County Park Authority

The Park Authority’s award-winning Adapted Aquatics Program is an individualized swimming and water activity program for adults and children with physical and developmental disabilities. Program offerings include learn-to-swim classes, aquatic exercise classes, and training for Special Olympics and Paralympic Swim team competition.

These swim classes are for individuals who have developmental disabilities (such as intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, language and learning disorders, cerebral palsy) ages 8 and up. Adapted Aquatics classes are group lessons typically with a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio. The classes focus on Swim Team training, intermediate level. Students are training for possible Special Olympics opportunities.

The Adapted Aquatics Program needs volunteers who can commit to the majority of classes during a session. Classes are always held on the weekend only. Current weekly session ends November 20, but a new session begins in January 2022.

There are several ongoing opportunities with Adapted Aquatics, but a high need at the sites below.

If any of these opportunities interest you, please contact RSVP Volunteer Specialist, Shannon White, at swhite@volunteerfairfax.org.
