Huntley Meadows Park, the largest park in Fairfax County spanning 1,452 acres, is a sanctuary for over 600 species of plants and animals.

Fairfax County Park Authority is looking for volunteers to help Huntley Meadows in day-to-day activities and more. If any of the following volunteer opportunities interest you, please reach out to RSVP Volunteer Specialist, Shannon White at swhite@volunteerfairfax.org.

  • Volunteer on Duty
    • Welcome visitors upon arrival at Historic Huntley or Huntley Meadows Park.
    • Provide an interpretive history of the ground, park, and surrounding area.
    • Provide information on the park’s basic operations, facilities, programs, and rules.
    • Answer phone and take messages.
    • Assist with project as needed.
    • Work one 3-hour shift per month on a Saturday between March and November.
    • Prefer one year commitment.
    • Background check required.
  • Vernal Pool Surveyor Volunteer
    • Commitment: 1-3 hours every 2-3 weeks year-round.
    • Weekday availability
    • Previous field work not required. Familiarity with field guides and water testing an equipment a plus.
    • Comfortable working off-trail, in the field, independently, on uneven terrain for up to 4 miles in a variety of weather conditions.
    • Comfortable following safety and disinfection protocols.
    • Must have strong interest in nature and stewardship of Fairfax County.
    • Willingness to learn faunal identification, including egg masses and tadpoles.
    • Ability and willingness to enter vernal pools to complete survey.
    • Must complete training program on-site.
  • Historic Huntley Docent (Tour Guide) Volunteer
    • Saturday availability (mid-morning to early afternoon, tour dependent).
    • Commitment: 3-6 hours per month for 1 year.
    • Welcome visitors upon arrival at Historic Huntley or Huntley Meadows Park.
    • Provide an interpretive history of the house, outbuildings, grounds, park, and surrounding area.
    • Register people for advertised programs and refer reservation requests to appropriate staff.
    • Answer phone and takes messages when needed.
    • Assists with projects as needed.
    • Background check required.
