2019 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics Volunteer Needs

The NVSO is the largest annual competition in Northern Virginia for those 50+. The NVSO is a volunteer-driven nonprofit. Volunteering with the NVSO is a healthy and social and a great way to give back to your community.
RSVP-Northern Virginia and the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics will hold a joint volunteer info session, Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 10 a.m., at the Oak Marr RECenter in Oakton. Are you in between jobs and looking to develop some new skills that might help you get back into the workforce? Being on the NVSO board is a great opportunity. Most of the opportunities listed below will allow you to develop some very portable talents that are in great demand.

Registrar’s Assistant – 30-40% of NVSO registrations are completed on paper. This volunteer will help process those registrations. Most of the work for this position takes place between June and mid-September. This volunteer will report to and be supported by the NVSO head registrar. This position also requires attending most monthly NVSO board meetings which are held on the second Tuesday of every month from 1 – 3 p.m. at University Mall near GMU.
Social Media Director – This volunteer will provide and post content to the NVSO’s social media sites. Attending at least 6 of NVSO’s monthly board meetings that take place at 1 pm on the second Tuesday of each month is recommended. This volunteer will report to and be supported by the NVSO marketing manager.
Graphic Designer – This volunteer will create flyers, posters, t-shirts and slide shows that will help promote the NVSO brand. They will also prepare the registration brochure (from early April through May). This volunteer will report to and be supported by the NVSO marketing manager. This position also requires attending most monthly NVSO board meetings which are held on the second Tuesday of every month from 1 – 3 p.m. at University Mall near GMU.
NVSO Torchlight Ambassadors – Each year the NVSO fields requests from sports clubs, senior centers, retirement communities, civic clubs and TV and radio outlets for speakers who can spread the word on the health and social benefits of the NVSO. If you enjoy public speaking and are very enthusiastic about the senior games, this could be the perfect opportunity for you. You can speak to as many or as little number of groups as your schedule allows. This program is critical to attract new competitors to the NVSO.
Public Relations Specialist – This volunteer will write and distribute press releases and stories promoting the NVSO. This volunteer will report to and be supported by the NVSO marketing manager and advertising manager. This position also requires attending most monthly NVSO board meetings which are held on the second Tuesday of every month from 1 – 3 p.m. at University Mall near GMU. This volunteer will probably need to write and send out about 15 releases between May 1 and Labor Day and will have access to the complete 2018 NVSO photo library. Ideally, this volunteer will interview 3-4 NVSO competitors from last year for stories. Also, they will be the official “go-between” media and NVSO.
Writer for Website, social media and other public relations vehicles -Do you enjoy writing, meeting new people and promoting events? The NVSO generates several stories and news releases each year that not only publicize our events but also allow local reader to meet the fascinating people who take part in the senior games. This volunteer can work remotely or with others and this opportunity may require some travel. Attending board meetings optional.
Head Event Director – This volunteer will recruit and confirm event directors, schedule events, and procure venues for about 70 events (requires persistence and tracking of progress from February through August). This position also requires attending most monthly NVSO board meetings which are held on the second Tuesday of every month from 1 – 3 p.m. at University Mall near GMU.
Event Directors – year the NVSO holds dozens of different games spread across Northern Virginia. We depend on event coordinators to make sure everyone gets to where they are needed and each event runs smoothly.
Volunteer Photographers – The NVSO depends on volunteer photographers throughout the year. While most of the photo work takes place in September, the NVSO also uses volunteer photographers at promotional events and to help illustrate stories on our competitors being submitted to local papers and websites.
Advertising Assistant – Do you have a talent for being creative? NVSO is looking for an assistant advertising volunteer to help with NVSO’s marketing campaign. This volunteer could be in training to take the lead on our ads in 2020. Great way to learn the ropes.
