RSVP and UCM Alexandria Team Up for VolunteerFest 2018 Project

RSVP Northern Virginia is again teaming up with United Community Ministries of Alexandria on Make a Difference Day, Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018.

On the last Saturday of every month, the Capital Area Food Bank arrives at UCM with a big truck of fresh local produce which is distributed in its back parking lot, according to Diane Hill, a development and ccommunications officer with UCM.

Volunteers will be needed to help organize the produce before it is distributed, Hill says. The event is one of more than 40 community projects in VolunteerFest 2018, presented by AT&T and powered by Volunteer Fairfax. VolunteerFest is a nine-day offering of volunteer opportunities taking place across Northern Virginia. RSVP Northern Virginia is a program of Volunteer Fairfax, Volunteer Alexandria and Volunteer Arlington.

“UCM Alexandria is the primary social safety net agency here in Southeastern Fairfax County,” Hill says. “Our mission is to empower our neighbors in need so they can transform their lives.”

Hill points out that while Fairfax County is one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, more than a quarter of local children qualify for free or reduced-cost lunches, a key indicator of the level of need in our community.

“It’s really incredible to see the amount of produce that gets distributed and everyone is so appreciative,” says RSVP volunteer specialist Carly Hubicki, who took part in the UCM effort last year. “It’s a fun project! We encourage everyone to come out and try it,” she says.

In 2017, 5,000 unique individuals received nutritious food to alleviate hunger, thanks to the work of UCM, its volunteers and its supporters, according to the nonprofit’s annual report.
“VolunteerFest is an awesome chance to have fun with a team of people, meet new people and truly make a difference on Make a Difference Day,” Hill says.
